Detections of H5 bird flu in birds are expected as the bird flu virus is currently widely circulating in the environment.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">At this time, there are no reports of H5 bird flu infections in people or cattle in Virginia.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Examples of some recent animal health responses that VDH supported include:<\/span>\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On January 16, VDACS\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdacs.virginia.gov\/press-releases-250116-positive-avian-influenza-accomack-county.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">announced<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that testing of a commercial poultry flock in Accomack County returned presumptive positive results for H5 bird flu.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On January 20, the Metro Richmond Zoo\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/metrorichmondzoo.com\/newsroom\/statement-regarding-positive-tests-for-h5-bird-flu-in-cranes\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">announced<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0H5 bird flu detections in two deceased cranes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>What does VDH and LFHD do when public health learns of an H5 detection in birds?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Works closely with VDACS, federal animal health partners, and industry representatives to identify people potentially exposed to birds while they were infectious and\/or contaminated environments.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Interviews potentially exposed people to assess their exposure risk and enroll them in public health monitoring, as needed. Symptoms can include eye redness and mild flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, and tiredness). <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Let the provider know of contact with sick birds, poultry, cattle, or other animals. Stay away from other people (isolate) and do not go to work or school until you have been evaluated. Antiviral drugs that are used to treat seasonal flu are also used to treat bird flu infections.
