What is Public Health?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Public health is the work that protects and promotes the well\u2011being of people and the communities where they live, learn, work, and play. It is the practice of preventing disease, supporting healthy environments, and ensuring access to essential services. Across the country, public health departments partner with local agencies, schools, nonprofits, and community leaders to strengthen the systems that help people thrive. The American Public Health Association (APHA) describes this work as the backbone of community health through education, prevention, preparedness, and connection. Their video\u00a0\"That's Public Health\"<\/strong><\/a> captures how these efforts show up in everyday life.<\/p>\n

The West Piedmont Health District (WPHD) is proud to release its\u00a02025 Annual Report<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0a reflection of how these principles guided our work throughout Martinsville City and the counties of Henry, Franklin, and Patrick. This year\u2019s report highlights the progress we\u2019ve made together, the challenges we\u2019ve navigated, and the partnerships that continue to shape a healthier future for our region.<\/p>\n

In 2025, public health in West Piedmont meant expanding access to preventive care, strengthening community\u2011based maternal health supports, and advancing health equity through targeted outreach. It meant responding to emerging respiratory illnesses, supporting harm\u2011reduction strategies, and working closely with local partners to address the opioid crisis. It meant preparing our communities for emergencies, improving environmental health protections, and ensuring families had access to reliable information and resources.<\/p>\n

Most importantly, it meant collaboration. Our achievements this year were made possible through strong partnerships with local governments, schools, healthcare providers, nonprofits, faith communities, and residents who share our commitment to building a healthier region. Public health is never done alone, and this report reflects the collective effort of many dedicated individuals and organizations.<\/p>\n
