Large-Scale Community Clean-Up in Roanoke Featuring Sharps Disposal

(ROANOKE, Va.) – Observe demonstrations of the safe disposal of sharps (needles) found on the ground at a large-scale neighborhood clean-up day on Friday, January 23 at 1:00pm, starting at Belmont Christian Church, 1101 Jamison Ave. SE, 24013.

A community clean-up day has been planned by the Roanoke City & Alleghany Health Districts in Southeast Roanoke, with partners including I Heart SE neighbors, Bradley Free Clinic / HOPE Initiative, the Drop-In Center, the Virginia Harm Reduction Coalition, the Rescue Mission + Fralin Free Clinic, the Clean Valley Council, the Roanoke Homeless Assistance Team, and VDH Medical Reserve Corps volunteers.

The purpose of the event is a large-scale neighborhood clean-up, featuring demonstrations of the safe disposal of sharps litter found on the ground. With the right knowledge, residents in other neighborhoods can also address spots that need to be cleaned up.

“From time-to-time, cleaning up a neighborhood or business area will mean picking up used sharps. With some common household supplies, such as an empty hard-sided laundry detergent jug, residents can follow easy steps to safely dispose of sharps litter themselves,” said Nicole Davidson-Wert, RCAHD Population Health Community Coordinator. “Residents can learn how to safely take action themselves, however if an area has more than a few sharps on the ground, residents can also to request a special sharps clean-up through the Council of Community Services Drop-In Center or the Virginia Harm Reduction Coalition using a form on our website.”
